The Great Gatsby

This focus of this is to read "The Great Gatsby" by F. Scott Fitzgerald. In order to do that, however, we will have to learn about New York Society in the 1920's and become familiar with Fitzgerald's writing style. I have included links to each of the pieces you are expected to read, and I will have hard copies available in the classroom for students who would not like to read digitally.

Week One 1/28-2/1
Monday: Please have "Bernice Bobs Her Hair" read and bring notes to class with you. Be prepared to discuss the story and the literary elements it includes.

Tuesday: We will use class time to continue our discussion of "Bernice Bobs Her Hair" and look at some photos and advertisements to understand the fashion of the 1920's. If you are so inclined, feel free to bring in any photos you happen to find in your own research about the fashion.

Wednesday: We will begin class with a quick write answering the question "Are money and happiness reliant on one another? Why or why not?" and discuss our answers. Afterwards, we will read this 1921 article from The New York Times to really make sure we understand New York at that point in time.

Thursday:  We will recap everything we've done so far by making a circle map of everything we know about the 1920's. This day will serve as a chance to ask any questions that have not been answered, and we will conclude class by watching this video. For homework, you will be asked to write a paragraph about how you feel about "The Great Gatsby" before we read it.

Friday: We will begin reading together! We will do a choral reading of Chapter One, and students are expected to have Chapters 1-3 read for the following Monday.
